Living in Barcelona without a car makes sense almost all year round — the metro is good, most things are walkable and parking is a permanent headache.
Weekends are the exception: the coastal getaway, helping a friend move, the flea market, a day in the mountains. Hiring from Friday to Monday solves that without a parking space, an annual insurance policy or a roadworthiness test (the Spanish ITV).
Owning a car in Barcelona means insurance, road tax, the ITV roadworthiness test, servicing, depreciation and — by far the most expensive item in the Eixample — a parking space. If you genuinely only use it four or five weekends a month, do the maths before you buy: hiring usually wins, and you get to take whichever vehicle actually suits that particular weekend.

This is the detail that changes the maths most over a weekend. Hire from Friday to Sunday and you have 600 km in total to play with, even if you cover 400 of them on the Saturday. That’s enough to drive up to the Pyrenees and back, or to work your way along half the Costa Brava without watching the odometer. Extra kilometres are €0.30 each, and there are packs of 200 km for €40 or 100 km for €25 if you expect to go over.
You collect at Villarroel 58 during office hours, or at any hour from a private car park with our 24/7 service. If it’s easier, we’ll bring it to your door from €50 within the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are the busiest slots by some way: booking a few days ahead secures the vehicle you actually want.
One local note worth knowing if you’re new here: Barcelona’s Low Emission Zone (ZBE Rondas) applies on weekdays from 7am to 8pm and doesn’t operate at weekends, but our whole fleet is compliant either way — so a Friday afternoon pick-up is never a problem.

If your licence was issued in the EU or EEA, yes — it’s valid in Spain exactly as it is. You need to be 21 or over with 2 years’ licence held (25 for campervans); drivers aged 21–24 and 70–85 pay a €25/day surcharge. If your licence is from outside the EU/EEA, get in touch before booking at reservas@baovans.com and we’ll confirm what applies in your case.
